Teacher Training

About Yoga Certification

Many teachers and yoga schools offer their own yoga certification or yoga teacher training program. The Yoga Alliance has set up a program where you can apply for RYT (Registered Yoga Teacher) status, however this is not regulated by any government institution and is not a requirement to legally teach yoga.

Choosing a Yoga Teacher Training Program

If there is a particular style of yoga, or a studio or teacher that you practice with regularly it is a good idea to seek out a training that will keep you on that path. Ask your teacher if they offer teacher training or where they were trained.

Many schools of yoga have their own certification. If you complete their teacher training requirements, you are certified under that school.

Teacher training is an on-going process. Many teachers start with one program and then over the years take more trainings as a continuing education.

How do I open a yoga studio?
Here is some advice on opening a studio or starting any business:

Write a detailed business plan. This is an important step and will give you an idea how much capital you'll need for this venture - it will also be a valuable tool for determining the demand for yoga in your area. Without a good business plan, you may have difficulty renting space or persuading potential investors to lend you money.

Location is also very important - speak with someone in your area that understands real estate and can advise you on your specific situation.

This is an involved process - you may want to consider hiring a consultant to help you with the details - someone who understands yoga, your style of teaching and the yoga climate in your location. Boston Yoga offers consulting services for people looking to open a yoga studio.
