Beginner Classes
Most studios offer classes and workshops for beginners. If you are just starting out, we highly recommend you take a beginner class and speak with someone at the studio to determine the best curriculum.

Usually a beginner class will have special emphasis on the fundamentals of yoga (specific alignment for all the major poses in the sequence, proper breathing technique, discussion of yoga philosophy, etc ). There are a number of different yoga styles and we suggest you try a number of studios, classes and teachers to determine which style suits you the best.

What to Wear and Bring:
Wear comfortable workout clothing. You will be barefoot. Its a good idea to bring a change of clothes.

Bring a yoga mat if you have one, a towel and water. Some studios provide yoga mats and other supplies for a modest fee - it is best to check with the studio beforehand on what props they have available.

Yoga Studio Ettiquette:
Arrive early with plenty of time to sign-in, fill out any necessary forms and get yourself settled inside the yoga room. We suggest you allow 20 minutes the first time.

Shoes are generally removed at the entrance area of the studio.

Let "the call" come from within... please turn off your cell phone before entering the studio.

Refrain from wearing perfume. If possible, shower before class.

Plan to stay for the entire length of the class leaving early is distracting to the teacher and other students and you will miss out on the most important relaxation of the class. Most yoga classes are 90 minutes in length - this varies in each studio.

Often, class will end with the teacher and class reciting the word 'Namaste'. Namaste means: "that which is sacred in me honors that which is sacred in you."

Helpful Hints:
Let the instructor know if you have any injuries or if you are pregnant - they can work with you to offer appropriate alternatives to the postures.

Practice Yoga on an empty stomach. It is best to wait 3 hours after eating to practice yoga.

Make sure you are hydrated well before class.

Remember, Yoga is non-competitve - rest when you need to and work within your body's abilities. Flexibility is not a pre-requisite… a flexible attitude is!

Most of all, have fun, ask questions - the teachers are there to support you!
